CHAPTER TEN

ELIZABETH WOULD HAVE been finding her time in London very pleasing, if it weren’t for the fact that she was plagued by thoughts of Mr. Darcy.

London was a bustling place with dirty streets and noise at all hours, but she liked the frenzy of the city, the activity and the people. There was something about being amongst so many people that made her feel energetic and excited.

Jane received visitors more often than they would have had visitors at home in the country. It was not every day that they whiled away the morning hours with callers, but it was more often than not. Amongst the frequent callers were the Bingley sisters. Mrs. Hurst and Miss Bingley often appeared. They were unchanged in their characters, still a bit haughty and self-important, but they did seem to know all the best gossip, and Elizabeth could not help but find herself entertained as they would take each item in the gossip rags and add juicy tidbits to the story that they had uncovered by talking to others.

Elizabeth was careful when they were around, because she had noticed that they had no loyalty whatsoever. They called regularly on other women and reported all that had happened while they were there, keeping nothing back. Elizabeth assumed that this must mean that when they were with others, they were free with anything that they had heard from Elizabeth or Jane as well, and this meant that it was not wise to reveal anything to them at all.

The best thing about their visits was that while they were there, Elizabeth was so preoccupied by listening to them and checking herself before saying anything that Mr. Darcy was wiped clean from her head.

She wished that she could be so lucky the rest of the time, but he haunted her. The memory of his touch, his gentle kiss, the way he had looked at her… She could not forget any of it.

She attempted to push back her thoughts of the man, but she was unable to do so. The harder she tried not to think of him, the more that she did.

It was the worst in the dark, when she was lying in her bed. She would toss and turn under the blankets, his dark eyes dancing in her mind’s eye.

Sometimes, at night like this, she began to contemplate the idea of being ruined in a way that she had never contemplated it before. Indeed, it was something that she had never felt interested in, only horrified by. She was still horrified by it, but she found herself wondering about it all.

Why was it that women could be ruined but men couldn’t? It hardly seemed fair to her. And why was it that in order to have any sort of freedom at all, she had to be married, and that in order to be married, she had to be intact?

She knew that widows sometimes got remarried, so it didn’t seem as if it were the act that ruined a woman for other men’s use, only whether or not it occurred within marriage.
